The ACORN & Obama Record – FACT CHECK

October 7, 2008

THE ACORN/OBAMA RECORD

Obama Formerly Represented ACORN, Taught Classes For Future Leaders Of ACORN, And They Endorsed His 2008 Presidential Campaign:

Obama Directed Project Vote And Later Taught Classes For “Future Leaders Identified By ACORN And The Centers For New Horizons.” “He [Obama] says he is drawn to politics, despite its superficialities, as a means to advance his real passion and calling: community organization. … In 1992 Obama took time off to direct Project Vote, the most successful grass-roots voter- registration campaign in recent city history. Credited with helping elect Carol Moseley-Braun to the U.S. Senate, the registration drive, aimed primarily at African-Americans, added an estimated 125,000 voters to the voter rolls — even more than were registered during Harold Washington’s mayoral campaigns. ‘It’s a power thing,’ said the brochures and radio commercials. … Obama continues his organizing work largely through classes for future leaders identified by ACORN and the Centers for New Horizons on the south side.” (Hank De Zutter, Op-Ed, “What Makes Obama Run?” ChicagoReader, 12/8/95)

Obama Was Part Of Team Of Lawyers Who Represented ACORN In A Suit Against The State Of Illinois.

“Obama was part of a team of attorneys who represented the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) in a lawsuit against the state of Illinois in 1995 for failing to implement a federal law designed to make it easier for the poor and others to register as voters.” (Mike Robinson, “Obama Got Start In Civil Rights Practice,” The Associated Press, 2/20/07)

ACORN’s Political Action Committee Endorsed Obama.

“[A]CORN’s political action committee endorsed Barack Obama for President. … The endorsement reflects a belief that Obama — who worked as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago — understands that change must come from the ground-up, as part of a working coalition, rather than from position papers.” (Katrina Vanden Heuvel, Op-Ed, “ACORN: Obama Gets It,” The Nation, 2/23/08)

Obama’s Campaign Paid Over $800,000 To ACORN For Get-Out-The-Vote Efforts, But “Mistakenly Misrepresented” Their Work To The FEC:

Obama’s Campaign “Paid More Than $800,000” To ACORN For Get-Out-The Vote Efforts; The Campaign Originally “Misrepresented” The Group’s Work To The FEC. “U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign paid more than $800,000 to an offshoot of the liberal Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now for services the Democrat’s campaign says it mistakenly misrepresented in federal reports. An Obama spokesman said Federal Election Commission reports would be amended to show Citizens Services Inc. — a subsidiary of ACORN — worked in ‘get-out-the-vote’ projects, instead of activities such as polling, advance work and staging major events as stated in FEC finance reports filed during the primary.” (David M. Brown, “Obama To Amend Report On $800,000 In Spending,” Pittsburgh Tribune Review, 8/22/08)

While Serving On The Board Of Directors Of The Woods Fund, ACORN Received Thousands Of Dollars Of Grants From The Organization:

The Chicago ACORN Received Grants Of $45,000 (2000), $30,000 (2001), $45,000 (2001), $30,000 (2002), And $40,000 (2002) From The Woods Fund. (Donors Forum Website, ifs.donorsforum.org, Accessed 6/10/08)

NOTE: From 1993 To 2002, Barack Obama Served On The Board Of Directors For The Woods Fund. (Tim Novak and Fran Spielman, “Obama Helped Ex-Boss Get $1 Mil. From Charity,” Chicago Sun-Times, 11/29/07)

  1. All you “get ACORN” nuts act like these were all just turned in yesterday! These were turned in over a period of something like 14 months, and the ACORN employees who were discovered have been terminated. ACORN itself informed state officials about the questionable registrations collected by its employees that are now under investigation.

The fact is ACORN has been a target for the GOP for years because they work to register voters in some of the “not so well off” neighborhoods, and the GOP doesn’t want those people to vote. Some ACORN employees did improper things and they were fired. A couple thousand fraudulent registrations are under investigation, out of 1.3 million! It is sad that these employees have tainted the election process, however, election fraud has gone on with BOTH SIDES for decades. This is not new, and it shouldn’t even be news.

Yes, Senator Obama has a few ties to ACORN…

*In 1995, Mr. Obama was on a team of lawyers that represented ACORN in a lawsuit vs. the state of Illinois to have the state comply with FEDERAL LAWS intended to enhance access to the polls. AND the Justice Department was on the SAME SIDE as ACORN in the lawsuit, as was the League of Women Voters among other organizations. The plantiffs won.

*Senator Obama conducted two LEADERSHIP training sessions, each about an hour, for ACORN in Chicago over a three-year period in the late 1990s. He was not paid for that work.

These fraudulent registrations a pain, not a danger. There are many safeguards in place and IDs are required when people obtain their ballots. County elections boards have some safeguards to weed out faulty registrations.

For example, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio:
    – All cards are scanned into a computer so the board has a copy. Originals are kept in storage. Scanning the cards puts the voter’s signature into the computer system and transfers the signature to poll books used for verification on election day.
    – The 43 workers in the registration department enter the information on the cards into the board’s computer database.
    – Workers put in the date of birth and check to see if the name on the card is already in the system. If the name is there and the signature matches, the record is updated with information from the most recent card. If the name isn’t in the system with that birth date, a new record is created and checked against the statewide database to see if that person is registered elsewhere.
    – The board double-checks registrations by comparing information with the databases of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and Social Security numbers.
    – Once the data is entered, the board sends the prospective voter an address confirmation card, which is not to be forwarded to another address. This card, workers say, is a key safeguard against voter fraud.
    – If the card is returned as undeliverable, workers put a note next to the voter’s name in the poll books, telling poll workers the person must supply proof that the address listed is correct. Only then would the person be given a regular ballot. Otherwise, THEY HAVE TO VOTE PROVISIONALLY until their information is confirmed.

    • “This is not new, and it shouldn’t even be news.”

‘Keep people in the dark about political fraud because it’s old news? How ignoble of you.

  2. Oh well……
Half of you people don’t even know what Acorn really is, or who Ayers really is. Just keep getting your talking points from Bill Orally, and Rush “Oxycontin” Limbaugh. It’s helping the Obama campaign more than you know.. hahha

Educate yourselves on how the GOP deceived you in the last two elections on the Acorn issue. And how A.G. Gonzales fired attorneys because they wouldn’t lie to cover up the GOP’s false claims of voter fraud and voter manipulation in ’04. And yet, the GOP continues this tactic.

I find it hilarious… You people nitpick over NON-FACTS, NON-ISSUES and not the REAL issues… Because, it’s all you have. Because you know McCain is a major failure when it comes to real issues. Or is it you don’t want to talk about your Messiah #2 Palin doing (and being charged by a bi-partisan review) in exactly what she is campaigning against? Some change there.. haha.

Oh….And what is that coming around the corner, you ask?
    Obama at the finish line!
Your Neo-Con days of ruining this country are OVER!

But don’t worry, we still love you. We will still give you affordable health care, jobs in this country, and benefits if you are ever down on your luck.

They won’t be taken away from you, like they have been to 95% of Americans currently.. Just this time around, it will be for all – and not just the few rich neo-cons. Nothing to be scared of my neo-con friends.

Please, all my neo-con friends. Take the fancy bed-linen off of your heads, put away your stuffed toy monkeys with Obama stickers on them and go home. A true patriot will soon be in the White House.. Don’t fear him, even your Messiah #1 McCain says he’s an upstanding man:

  3. “Your Neo-Con days of ruining this country are OVER!” Amen brother!

ACORN is definately a dud when it comes to relavant news. I would like to see the person that actually tries to go in and vote as a Mickey Mouse. (Yes, other articles make mention of Mickey Mouse being a fradulantly registered voter!) There is a large gap between registration fraud and the real crime we are worried about of voter fraud.

    Headline Reads: “370-165 Obama Wins!”

  4. As a former pollster in 2004, let me explain to you how polls work. For example, the pollsters ask 1000 people who they are going to vote for on election day. Let’s say 600 of them say Obama. The pollsters then multiply the percentage of Obama votes (3/5) by the number of registered Democrats. Most polls don’t account for crossover votes because they see it as a wash. Then the poll is released. I live in NV, which is a swing state that was disrupted by ACORN’s fraud. It is not the fear that Mickey Mouse is going to show up and vote in NV as you correctly pointed out. However, polls do sway the outcomes of elections there is no disputing that. It discourages people to “Waste” their time by waiting in line for 2 hours to vote. If Nevadans see Obama is up 55-45 they may be inclined to stay home, and vice versa.

For the reasons explained above, I vowed to never poll again, nor will I trust a poll.

Those are the fears with registration fraud. Not to mention out of state residents voting in OH by using a temporary address…this is acctually happening. You might want to read/watch the news every once in a while.
